Two of the latest architectural projects in New York City include the construction of the city’s second highest peak and proposed upgrades for two key transit centers.
Ground was recently broken for the One Vanderbilt skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan. Its height – at 1,501 feet – will surpass the 1,396-foot 432 Park Avenue building as the second tallest peak in the Big Apple.
And then there’s the local government’s implementation of proposed architectural redevelopments that could significantly improve Penn Station and the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
The architect of the One Vanderbilt project worked on the building’s design on an entire city block that was torn down for the development plan. Its shape draws inspiration from Art Deco towers.
The mixed-use property will be comprised of 1.6 million square feet of office space on the upper floors, and retail and atrium spaces at the lower levels. The project’s design includes connectivity to public transit hubs like Grand Central Station. One Vanderbilt will have links to the terminal through an enormous staircase and several elevators on the ground floor.
As landscape architecture in New York City has become a hot topic, some of the proposed designs for modernizing Penn Station include the reconstruction of Madison Square Garden as a skylight that resembles an “urban oasis.”
As long as the Garden remains atop Penn Station, the rail terminal will still be boxed unless the Garden’s operational license does not get renewed after seven years. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo introduced a plan to transfer up to 20% of the train station’s operations to reduce the amount of commuters passing through the transit center.
Almost a million people use Penn Station and the Port Authority Bus Terminal every day, which is why some have floated ideas to enhance the structures and surroundings of both transportation facilities.
